Thunder Hill Shelter

Mile 770.3
Elevation 3,937
Miles Hiked 10.2

It’s supposed to rain again, so I planned a short day to get into a shelter before the rain starts.  I left late from the previous shelter – about 9:00 AM.  After checking out the tree that fell next to the shelter last night, I started hiking.  Nothing unusual about the hike – just the normal ups and downs.

I did come upon one interesting geological structure.  It’s called the guillotine.  A rock is perched between two others and hikers have to pass under it.  Needless to say, I didn’t take my time passing under it.  Also there is an electronics installation on the mountain.

I arrived at the shelter about 4:30 PM.  The party of five hikers that was at the last shelter were there, but they were planning to go.  Suddenly, a huge cloud burst hit with an intense rain shower.  It lasted about fifteen minutes and then the five hikers left quickly.  Radar showed another, bigger storm heading our way.

The shelter filled up quickly and the bigger storm hit about an hour later.  Due to the altitude of the shelter, the temperature dropped fast and it got cold.  I climbed into my sleeping bag to stay warm and there I stayed until morning.
