I left the Lookout Shelter with Riz and Jelly just after 6:00 AM. They were trying to get to Hanover, NH in the next two days and I wanted to do the same. Jelly had indicated he wanted to go past a shelter at 14 miles and get to the White River in West Hartford, VT.
The hiking was challenging with many ups and downs, plus the river was nearly 20 miles away. After about 3 1/2 hours we came to a road where there is a snack shack. I bought a small pie and breakfast burrito. I was pretty hungry even though I ate breakfast earlier.
We continued on into the afternoon and then stopped at another roadside store to buy ice cream and get water. The heat and constant climbs were tough to handle, but we were determined to get to the White River. Jelly dropped back and Riz and I kept going. We were supposed to stop at the Thistle Shelter to meet Jelly, but we missed it and didn’t realize our mistake until almost a mile past the shelter.
Jelly decided to camp just after the Thistle Shelter, so it was just Riz and I. We arrived at the river just after 7:00 PM. There is a trail angel who has a barn on the river. They let us stay in the barn, which had beds (no pillows or sheets). The owner also fed Riz and me. We then went for a swim in the river to cool off.
