Mile 1,479.5
Elevation 479 feet
Miles Hiked 4.1
A little slow getting up this morning, so I didn’t get going until 8:00 AM. Today was provisioning day. I hiked 4.1 miles to highway CT 4, and then walked a mile to the town of Cornwall Bridge. This is a very small town from what I can see. The post office was right on the main highway, so it was easy to get my box of food.
Across the street from the post office is a grocery store/deli where I got a big sandwich and a drink. I sat on the store porch and enjoyed some really good town food. Afterwards, I packed up my backpack with all the new provisions and headed to the highway to return to the Appalachian Trail.
I stopped at a crossroad stop sign and tried my luck with hitchhiking. After a few minutes, a car pulls into a nearby bank and a young woman jumps out and walks over to me. She offered me a ride and mentioned in passing that she had a hostel, too. After ten days without a shower, here was my chance. I told her I’m in and we headed for Lakeville where her house is located.
When we got there I immediately took a shower and washed clothes. Sandi, the hostel caretaker, left on some errands , so I was by myself. I called the outfitter in Kent where I was originally supposed to go yesterday to buy shoes. It looks like my decision not to go into Kent was a good one. The outfitter hasn’t sold shoes in ten years. They told me about a store in Litchfield that has shoes. I called them and sure enough, they have shoes. Sandi agreed to take me there tomorrow before I get back on the trail, so it looks like I might get those shoes I need.
I ate dinner at a restaurant down the street from the hostel, and now I’m heading for bed.
