Tony's Hiking Adventure

Globe, Arizona

No, that’s not my Globe hotel. My tent where I spent the night. A really good campsite.

Today I’m going into the town of Globe to pickup provisions and take a day off.  There was no hurry since I didn’t want to get into Globe too early and not be able to check in at the hotel.

The trail was fairly easy as it descended to a road and the Roosevelt Dam.  The road, highway 188, would take me into Globe.  I was a little worried when I saw how sparsely it was traveled by cars.  Cars were going by maybe every minute or so.  Nevertheless,  I caught my first ride within 15 minutes.  He took me 15 miles of the 35 miles total.

So now, I’m really in the middle of nowhere.  I was surprised when another car stopped for me within 10 minutes.  That driver took me to a point 5.5 miles outside of Globe.  Then I sat an hour trying to go the rest of the distance.  Frustrated, I began walking.  As I passed one of those “dollar” stores a guy pulled into the parking lot and asked me where I was going.  Bingo!  I arrived at a Motel 6 a little before noon.

The rest of the day was laundry and relaxing.  I’m already obsessing about getting back to the trail Tuesday.  I wrote several shuttle drivers, but I’m not confident they’ll be able to provide a ride back to the trail.  I sure hope my hitchhiking luck holds out.
