I was up at 6 AM, but there was a lot to do before leaving. On October 5 a big storm came through. It was quite impressive with hail, lightning, thunder and of course rain. While my tent kept me dry, it had a lot of mud on it. I tried to clean most of it off.
Anyway, I was off by 8:15 AM. The Grand Canyon National Park has a great series of asphalt paths. Unfortunately, they are not signed very well. I got lost, but using Guthook, my navigation app, I found the trail.
Most of the morning, I hiked on the asphalt path until I again missed a turn. This time I had to cross a road, climb under a barb wire fence and bushwack to the trail. Hey it keeps things interesting.
The rest of the day was pretty easy. There were no big climbs, which was good because I had just picked up provisions the day before. My backpack was heavy!
Towards the end of the day, I got water from one of the nastiest wildlife ponds I’ve seen. There was a guy setting up a hunting blind while I was getting the water. When he saw what I was doing, he offered to cache a jug of water for future hikers. I hope he follows through. There is not much water to be had after the Gran Canyon.
I stopped at 5 PM and setup camp among some pine trees. Nice spot.
