I never learn.  Last night I pitched my tent close to a lake.  This morning I woke up and the tent was wet.  That’s what I get for camping near water.  Anyway, I packed it up wet and got on the way about 7:30 a.m.

My tent with lake in background.

Today, I hike to White Pass and then catch a hitch, if I can, to Packwood.  I have a resupply box waiting for me at the post office in Packwood, and I also want to stay for a couple of days.  I should have made reservations but I haven’t had cell service in a week.

I arrived at the trailhead about noon, and then walked down the highway a ways to see if I could get a ride.  Highway 12 was closed due to the fire 20 miles to the east.  That gave cause for concern because it would limit the number of cars going the way that I needed to go.  However, my concern was not found at all because a car pulled up and asked me if I needed a ride into Packwood.  I gladly accepted the ride.

After getting my resupply box I walked over to a hotel which I had researched.  The Packwood Inn was a short walk from the post office.  I inquired about getting a room and they told me they were full.  A little shameless begging, and they came up with a room that was on hold, and I may be able to get after 3:00 p.m.  I dropped my backpack in the lobby of the hotel and went across the street to eat lunch.  When I returned to the hotel they had come up with a room for me. I was so happy.  I really did not want to go back to the trail this evening.

Now if I can just get a room for the next night that would be great.
