Friday night at Blue Mountain shelter was brutal. It was very cold, probably in the 20’s, and the wind sounded like a freight train running through the camp site. I had bought a sleeping bag liner a few days earlier and fortunately it kept me from shivering all night.
It was a light day today. From Blue Mountain shelter, I hiked about three miles. When I came out of the woods at Unicoi Gap, some trail magic was in progress. These guys had hamburgers, hot dogs, candy, donuts, chips, etc waiting for the hikers – all free. This is the second time this has happened.
After eating my fill, I caught a ride to the Top of Georgia Hostel to do some wash and a bunk for the night. Unfortunately, Sarah, although she had a paid reservation, didn’t make it. It is safe to say, she won’t be joining me in the future either.
Sunday, I’m doing a slackpack hike. My backpack gets left at the hostel, and I’m going back to Unicoi Gap to hike 16 miles to where the hostel is to pickup my backpack. Wish me luck!
