Campbell Shelter – McAfee Knob

Mile 712.7

This is the day to see McAfee Knob.  McAfee Knob is one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail. It was featured in a scene in the movie “A Walk In the Woods.”  It’s also been on the cover of several hiking books of which I am aware.

I started out around 7:30 AM while Creak left a little before me.  Because the Knob is such a popular place, we debated whether or not to even go up to it today.  There were a lot of day hikers up there, and we didn’t want to get in the middle of them.  We stopped at Catawba Mountain Shelter and talked it over.  We finally decided to go up around 6:00 PM to avoid the crowd.  Bodybag and her dog Zee would join us, too.  So we sat at the shelter for about 4 hours and talked until it was time to go.

The hike up was strenuous but quick enough because we were well rested.  Once at the Knob the scenery was spectacular.  Check out the pictures below.  That’s me standing on a ledge and  in another picture, down close to the edge to peer over.

After sitting up on the Knob and talking we headed down to Campbell Shelter for the night.  Creak and Bodybag with Zee pitched tents while I stayed in the shelter.
