Another Ridge Hike with Better Weather

Miles Hiked 132.4
Elevation 10,771 feet
Miles Hiked Today 13.3

Got off to a late start today. I left Copper Mountain Resort at 9:30 AM. After the wild hike the day before, I was in no hurry. The hike today would reach a summit first of 12,044 feet and then another at 12,280 feet. All together elevation gain would exceed 3,500 feet. And bad weather was expected again.

The climb up was uneventful. However, as soon as I started walking above the treeline, I could see the storm clouds building. Another hiker was nearby and he had decided to sit on the ridge and watch the weather in case it started storming. I don’t know what his plans were if it did start storming. I kept going.

As it happens, there were a few sprinkles but nothing even worth pulling out the rain gear. I made both summits and headed down the mountain. I got lucky this time.

I filled up with water on the way to camp and had my tent up by 6 PM. The day went well and I’m happy to say there was no repeat of yesterday.

Those afternoon storms are scary. I can remember biking in Aspen. I never go anywhere without foul weather gear…. but not Monroe. It was thundering and I am pushing him to bike harder up the trail from Snowmass to Aspen with lightening all around us.
