I made it to the Pashubbe Shelter. That was the goal that I set yesterday, but wasn’t very optimistic that I would make it. Well I did, but a little worse for wear.
In order to hit the goal, I was up at 5:00 a.m. and on the trail by 6:15 a.m. . It was still dark when I started hiking, but the sun came up soon after I started and I was able to turn off my headlamp.
About a mile into the days hike, the trail became easier and I was able to make some time. Now when I say easier that doesn’t mean that the rocks disappeared. They were still there twisting and turning my ankles as I moved down the trail.
I made it to the Winding Stair Shelter at 11:00 a.m. . That was supposed to be the place where I was going to stay the night before. After having lunch, I took off again about 11:45 a.m. . The rest is a day was tough with numerous ascents.
I was a mile from my destination shelter at 5:15 p.m. when it finally got so dark I could hardly see. Instead of putting on my headlamp, I kept going until I was right at where I should be turning to the shelter. Problem was I couldn’t find the trail to the shelter, so I went ahead and put my headlamp on. Even so, it was difficult finding the shelter in the dark but I finally did.
I’m not going to try to do 17 miles again tomorrow. I’m just going to go with it and see how far I can get.
