Ouachita Trail

State Line Shelter

Miles Hiked 46.8
Elevation 2,566 feet
Miles Hiked Today 12.7

Here I am at the State Line shelter. It was a goal I set this morning and I arrived while it was still light out. That makes two out of the four days I’ve been hiking where I got to a shelter when it was light out.

I’ve begun to wonder about the mileage that is reported in my navigation app. Yesterday, I supposedly did 17 miles, while my health monitor recorded 23 miles.  Today, I did a little short of 13 miles according to the navigation app, but my phone says I did 17 miles.  Both days it sure seemed like I did more than what the app said. It’s all a little suspicious.

The day started with me taking off just as the sun was coming up. First thing in the morning was a thousand foot climb. That is not my favorite way to start the day. However after the climb, the trail got easier and remained on a level course for a good part of the day. In fact it wasn’t until the end of the day that the trail went up again another 1,400 feet. That was a real killer at the end of the day. Of course the climb was very steep and loaded with rocks. Yep the rocks are still there.
