Oak Mountain Shelter

OT Mile 167.4
Miles Hiked 140.9
Elevation 1,694 feet
Miles Hiked Today 8.8

The day started a little later than usual. Today’s plan is to go just a little bit less than 9 miles to the Oak Mountain Shelter. I was off by 7:30 a.m. .

This was another day of rocks and going up and down mountain gaps. In comparison with previous days, my footpace was slower due to the amount of rocks in the trail. With all of the ascents and descents, I probably racked up around 3,000 ft in elevation gain.

Consistent with most of the other shelters, this shelter had an 800-foot climb to get to it. The short day sure came in handy since all of the rocks and climbs wore me out.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a 15-mile day. If it’s anything like today I may cut that short and stop at the next shelter. My only concern is the weather. A front is going to come through in 2 days and that means a lot of rain. I want to try to avoid that. At the pace that I’ve been going, I should finish the trail in 3 days.
