Mike and I were up early and on our way by 6:30.  Mike is the hiker I met yesterday who is going to share the cabin with me at Acorn Cabins.  The target today is highway 2.  This is an acces point for Wrightwood.  We could have gone down a closer trail, Acorn Trail, but that would get us to the cabin too early.

The trail was still up and down.  All total, 700 feet of elevation was lost to highway 2.  When we arrived at the highway, we decided to try to hitchhike into town.  Although there was no traffic on the road, we got a ride almost immediately from trail angel, Dale.  He pulled into the trailhead and went back out to pick us up on the road.

The first thing Mike and I did was go to Grizzlies Restaurant for a huge breakfast.  I saw Jordan and New Zealand there along with numerous other hikers.  After breakfast, we visited Mt. Hardware and then the post office.  Finally, Mandy from Acorn Cabins picked us up at Jensen’s grocery store for a ride to the cabin.

Not knowing what to expect, I wasn’t surprised by the cabin given the price.  It was essentially a 12′ x 12′ room with bunk beds and a separate bathroom with shower.  There was a coffee maker, small refrigerator, microwave and small table.  It wasn’t bad, but I would have liked more room.  The most curious feature was a composting toilet.

Mike and I settled in and joined a couple of other hikers in the next cabin.  Ed and his wife are from northern England.  I’ve seen them on the trail a few times before.  Tomorrow is a zero day of doing nothing.
