June 15 was a zero day, which means no hiking. Actually, I’m done with the PCT for now. I have a personal emergency at home that requires my attention. So, today is being spent cleaning up myself and gear and doing a lot of research on how to get to Tampa Bay from Tehachapi, CA. As it turns out, it’s not that hard. There is a bus station a little over a block from the Sure Stay Best Western Hotel where I’m spending a couple of days.
I made arrangements to travel and then just chilled. Yesterday, I ate at a cool independent fast food restaurant called Burger Spot. I had a beef sandwich, fries and a milk shake. It was so good, another trip was warranted. The fact that the restaurant is only a couple of blocks from the hotel was a contributing factor. I had another great lunch there. Of course, hiker hunger was raging, so dog biscuits would have tasted fantastic.
After lunch, I put the finishing touches on my travel plans back at the hotel and rested up. Then it was time for dinner. I was intent on catching up on the consumption of good food. Don’t get me wrong. The freeze dried meals I eat each day for dinner on the trail are quite good. However, they are not enough, and the meals during the other parts of the day, quite frankly, suck. I mean, you can only eat so much Spam and candy before you dread the thought of pulling them out to eat.
The reviews on a place called Kelcy’s Cafe were pretty good and they had meat loaf! I was there early for dinner and the place was almost empty. That was not an indication of the quality of food, though. The meat loaf was great.
After dinner, I walked around a bit and then headed for the hotel. It was early to bed, because tomorrow was going to be a long day to get from Tehachapi to home in Florida.
