Today is the last day I’ll hike in Bermuda.   For this hike, I chose to stay close to the harbor where the boat is anchored.  The Ferry Reach and Martelo Tower trail fit the bill nicely.  It’s just over 6.5 miles, which a good part of the approach from where the boat is anchored.

The following is from the Explore Bermuda website.

Ferry Reach Park is a beautiful public park located in the eastern end of Bermuda, in St. George’s Parish. The park is known for its stunning ocean views, beautiful natural surroundings, and multiple forts.

The park covers several acres and features a variety of walking trails, picnic areas, and benches for visitors to enjoy. In addition to its natural beauty, Ferry Reach is also home to several historic landmarks, including the Martello Tower, a stone fortress built by the British in the early 19th century.”

I left the boat about 2:30 p.m. and headed west to the beginning of the trail.  At the start there were quite a few cars on the road and of course no sidewalk. However, that didn’t last long and the traffic slowed to a trickle. After about a mile, I came to the trail startpoint. It was a narrow and overgrown trail that went steeply up.  Once at the top of the climb, the trail widened and flattened.

As with the two other hikes, there were some nice views of the water north of the island. It was a bright sunny day and I enjoyed the view.

I hung around for awhile inspecting the structures built over 300 years ago until it was time to head back.  The first part of the hike was on roadway. The return trail joined the Bermuda Railway Trail, so there was more trail walking and less road walking.

The rest of the hike was uneventful and I was close to my dinghy pickup point by 5:30.  That’s when I encountered a couple of radio controlled model boats zipping around a course super fast.  I asked one of the operators how fast the boats went and he said 60 to 70 kph.  Wow!
