Last night’s tentsite was good and I slept well. However, in the middle of the night, I heard footsteps. Some crazy was roaming the area. My tent was a minimum of 100 yards from the trail. I’d love to know what the guy who walked by my tent was doing so late at night and so far off the trail.
I was up and hiking by 6:00 a.m. . The day started out tough. There was a big elevation gain, which was very steep, and then the trail went down a precarious, rocky switchback. However, the trail mellowed out after that. If there was a climb, it was short and not steep. The same was true for descents. The trail crossed several meadows, which is unusual. In my hiking of the PCT, there have rarely been the number of meadow crossings as there was today. I really enjoy the meadow crossings. It gives you an opportunity to see the far off views.
Around noon, I was stopped by a forest ranger. He wanted to see my PCT permit. That’s the first time I have ever been asked to show my permit I handed over the permit and the ranger signed it.
The rest of the afternoon was uneventful and I just enjoyed the hike. There was a section of trail that had a bunch of blowdowns, but they were easily crossed.
I quit hiking for the day much earlier than I wanted. I had found a good tentsite and there was concern about going further and not finding a testsite. My navigation app, Far Out, didn’t show any tentsites for at least the next six miles. After much thought, I chose to call it a day at 4 p.m..
