Ferry Reach and Martelo Tower Trail

Miles Hiked 8.45
Elevation Gain 174 feet

Today is the last day I’ll hike in Bermuda.   For this hike, I chose to stay close to the harbor where the boat is anchored.  The Ferry Reach and Martelo Tower trail fit the bill nicely.  It’s just over 6.5 miles, which a good part of the approach from where the boat is anchored.

I left the boat about 2:30 p.m. and headed west to the beginning of the trail.  At the start there were quite a few cars on the road and of course no sidewalk. However that didn’t last long and the traffic slowed to a trickle. After about a mile, I came to the trail startpoint. It was a narrow and overgrown trail that went steeply up.  Once at the top of the climb, the trail widened and flattened.

As with the two other hikes, there were some nice views of the water north of the island. It was a bright sunny day and I enjoyed the view.

The trail ultimately led me to Ferry Point and Whalebone Bay.  There was a fort at the point and a placard told of how the fort lookouts were on the watch for pirates.

I hung around for awhile inspecting the structures built over 300 years ago until it was time to head back.  The first part of the hike was on roadway. The return trail joined the Bermuda Railway Trail, so there was more trail walking and less road walking.

The rest of the hike was uneventful and I was close to my dinghy pickup point by 5:30.  That’s when I encountered a couple of radio controlled model boats zipping around a course super fast.  I asked one of the operators how fast the boats went and he said 60 to 70 kph.  Wow!

I arrived at the pickup point and chilled out while I waited fory ride.  Nice day.
