Woke this morning still alive after sleeping under a widowmaker (dead standing tree). I really didn’t think there’d be a problem, but it sounds dangerous at the least.
After a couple of difficult days, I decided to take this one easy. Although, there was a significant elevation gain during the day, I tried not to let it bother me. The goal was not to do a big mile day. So, going thirteen miles was going to get me to a campsite relatively early.

As I drew near the intended campsite for the night, my heart sank a bit when I saw another burned out, dead forest. I certainly didn’t want to sleep under more widowmakers. Luck has it though that the campsite was protected by live trees.
It is going to be cold tonight. The elevation of 6,457 feet, alone, will ensure temperatures ten degrees or more lower than had I camped several thousand feet down in elevation. It doesn’t help that it is also very windy up here. I’ll definitely be snuggling in my sleeping bag tonight.
