My campsite last night was very scenic on the shore of Charlton Lake. It was nice to have it all to myself. Come morning, it was hard to leave, but I was up and on my way by 6:45 a.m. . That is a little later than usual, but I didn’t plan on going too far today.
As I was leaving the campsite, a man in an orange safety vest approached me. Apparently he is part of a crew that is going to be cutting some trees down today, and he is warning all the hikers who are camped nearby. I’m a bit mistified as to what exactly they will be cutting down. Everything outside of the lake area is dead and they weren’t logging the trees at the lake.
I didn’t hang around to find out what the loggers were going to be cutting down. The trail was going up again and I was huffing and puffing my way to the top. Along the way, there was a stream of northbound through hikers that I met. The bubble is definitely here in Central Oregon.
Nothing much of consequence was happening on the trail today. I did scare a deer into running from the trail. He was kind of rude as I tried to take his picture and he would have nothing of it.
My distance goal for the day was about 15 miles. I was going to camp by another lake. However, I got there at 2:30 p.m. . That is much too early to stop, so I continued on to a trailhead.
Hiking to the trailhead added a few more miles to this days hike. The additional miles also put me that much closer to Shelter Cove Resort. Shelter Cove Resort will give me an opportunity to wash clothes, eat real food and take a shower. At my current campsite location, I am only about a mile and a half from Shelter Cove Resort. I’ll be there for breakfast.
