Last night I camped next to the Willamette Trailhead. It wasn’t a bad spot. At least it was flat, and the only negative was the highway noise. Even that didn’t really bother me, and I got a good night’s sleep.
The plus of sleeping by the trailhead is how close I was to Shelter Cove Resort. It was only 1.4 miles to the PCT junction with the blue blaze trail down to the resort. If you’re keeping track of mileage, I added the 1.3 miles of blue blaze trail to the days total distance. I really should have done that with the Youth Camp a week ago. That was a mile down a blue blaze trail.
So, I hiked into the Shelter Cove Resort, about 7:30 a.m. . After connecting my electronic devices to power for charging, I ordered breakfast. I was a little disappointed that the resort did not have a dining room. I had visions of sitting at a table inside and being served by a waiter. Instead, breakfast was ordered at a window, and when it was ready, I picked it up and took it to an outdoor picnic table. Despite my disappointment, the food was plenty and good.
A lot of northbound hikers came in throughout the morning and afternoon. This is definitely the northbound bubble of PCT through hikers. We hikers all congregate at a tent set aside for us. Within the tent is electricity for charging phones, battery blocks and what ever other electronic devices a hiker has.
The resort is located on Odell Lake. It is a very picturesque location. There are many private homes located on the lake and of course this resort. The lake even permits power boats and the resort has its own marina. It was interesting to explore and I meandered around checking it out.
In the afternoon, I got around to taking a shower and washing clothes. I’m not really sure what good that did since I’ll be hiking tomorrow, and I’ll just get dirty again. Oh well, a little reminder of civility in cleanliness isn’t all bad.
The resort provides a camping area at a low cost for PCT hikers. I took advantage of that and plan to go back to the PCT tent in the morning to charge my phone before I leave for the trail.
Crater Lake is only 86 miles away.
