I got an early start with the intent of getting water at the next reported stream. Unfortunately, it was dry. The next one was barely a trickle; nevertheless I was able to get a little over a liter of water. The lack of flowing streams became a real problem because there was no more reported water for over 10 miles and there were a series of steep climbs in front of me, one of which went from 3,000 feet to 5,100 feet. This climb had a few gaps in it where the climb went down, but for the most part it was up. I did not have enough water for the climb or to make it to next shelter.
Sometimes I firmly believe someone is looking out for me (if you know what I mean). The trail runs alongside a gravel road at the beginning of the climb. As I trudged along, a forest service truck goes by. The driver slowed down to look at me so I called to him and asked if he had any water. He pulled over, opened an ice chest and started taking out ice cold water. I drank two 16 Oz bottles while standing there, put three bottles in my hydration bladder and stuck three more on the outside of my backpack. CODY, YOU’RE MY HERO! By the way, the water I was depending on just before the shelter was dry.
I got into the shelter at 5:30, which was making good time. There’s a tent about 100 yards from the shelter, but I’m the only one in the shelter. Should be a good sleep if not a bit chilly.
Some scenery pics just because it is so cool.
