Hamilton to St. George’s Trail

Today the plan is to move the boat from the marina in Hamilton to St George’s Harbor on the other side of the island.  I looked at this on AllTrails and there is a marked trail called the Hamilton to St. George’s Trail.  I decided to walk the distance to where the boat owner, Jeff, plans to anchor for the next couple of days.  The hike will be approximately 11 miles on the trail and go through several towns and neighborhoods as well as bits and pieces of the Bermuda Railway Trail.

Hamilton to St. George’s Trail

Of course, the trail doesn’t start right at the Marina, so I began my hike on the west side of downtown Hamilton. It took over two miles to get to the start of the trail. When the trail did start, it was not a nice hard-packed dirt, tree shrouded trail. I was walking on sidewalks alongside a busy road.  At times there were no sidewalks, and I shared the road with cars and scooters.  That could be a little scary as the roads are not very wide.

As the hike went on, it joined a path on the Bermuda Railway Trail, which paralleled the coast.  The scenery was pretty awesome. The open water of the Atlantic was close by and it made for an enjoyable hike.

Eventually, there were causeways to cross and that I did not like. There are no sidewalks and the road was pretty narrow. Dodging oncoming cars is not one of my favorite things. Nevertheless, I made it past a few causeways and for the most part landed on sidewalks after.

About 3:30 p.m. I tried to reach the boat with the VHF radio I carried.  Surprisingly I did reach them and let them know my progress.  There was a good chance I would either beat them to the harbor or at least get there about the same time as they did.

Crossing another causeway I finally arrived in the town of St George’s.  I went to the marina to meet my dinghy ride back to the boat.

All the road walking aside, it wasn’t too bad of a hike. The sections  along the coastal waters were the best. Although the trail itself is about 11 miles, I went much further with the approach to the trail and a little meandering, so the trail miles came up significantly higher. The Hamilton to St George’s harbor Trail was definitely worth it and if you are ever on Bermuda, check it out.
