Luck was with me this morning. I caught a ride just a little ways from the cabin. It was 11:20 AM when I started hiking southbound on the trail again.

Tucked in the San Juan Mountains along the Continental Divide is one of Colorado’s hidden gems: Lake City. The mountain community is less than a square mile…

I’m on my way to a Lake City cabin. Lake City is 17 miles down a highway where you see a vehicle maybe every couple of minutes. It’ll be a difficult hitch.

Today’s hike includes gains of over 3,000 feet. The trail crosses Snow Mesa, which is a rather long, flat ridge walk. Snow Mesa averages just under 12,500 feet.

There are four big mountain summits I have to make. They total almost 7,000 feet in elevation gain. It will keep me around 12,000 feet of elevation all day.

Bushwhacking took me through dense shrub and forest. Using my compass, I navigated right to the trail an hour later, and I was on the go again.

Places to camp were pretty scarce, but I found a spot just to the left of the trail. I went over 300 miles today. About 170 miles to go.
Nothing really significant occurred during the day’s hike making it an average day. I set up camp by 5:30 PM.

There was a cow standoff. Yep, cows standing in the trail unfazed by my desire to pass unmolested by them. One cow stood right on the trail and stared at me.
